Thanks for a very interesting article.

I noticed that you can only submit to a CT log if your certificate is signed by a trusted CA. Do you know of any similar systems which accept certificates from non trusted CAs or self signed?

One use case is to be able to log certificates with custom extensions (which most CAs strip out).
